The Imo State Government is finalizing plans with the family of retired Justice of the Supreme Court, Chukwudife Oputa to fly him abroad for proper medical care.
Oputa was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre Owerri, three days ago after family members said he suffered severe stroke.
Governor Rochas Okorocha, who visited the ailing eminent jurist at the hospital on Wednesday, confirmed to reporters that the state government was already discussing the elder statesman’s medical trip overseas with his family.
Though he tried to dispel fears about the severity of Oputa’s case, the governor also kept sealed lips on details about the nonagenarian’s health.
Okocha simply said, “He is in good hands and his health is improving but he needed more medical attention abroad and in line with the wishes of the family we have concluded plans to immediately fly him abroad.
“As a great citizen of this country and Imo State, he deserves the best and the state is totally committed to that and all expenses will be taken care of”.
The governor was accompanied on the visit to the hospital by Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, Mr. Benjamin Uwajumogu.
It would be recalled that Justice Oputa was the Chairman of the famous Oputa Panel set up by then President Olusegun Obasanjo to look into the cases of human rights abuses by the military governments.
He is also the father of popular socialite and non-conformist, Charles ‘Charlie Boy’ Oputa.
