Police Deny Bank Robbery Inside ‘Prayer City’ (PHOTOS)

The Ogun State Police Command on Sunday claimed that robbers did not attack the Ecobank branch located inside the Mountain of Fire and Miracles’ Prayer City along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, in a statement said rather, the robbers merely attempted to break one of the Automated Teller Machines in the city.

The PPRO was, however, curiously silent on where the ATM was located and the fate of the security men who were guarding the place.

It was earlier reported that the robbers came into the city through the bush and later used a ladder to climb into the premises of the bank.

The robbers were said to have beaten up the security guards on duty and shot one of them. After they had subdued the guards, the robbers made for one of the ATMs and attacked it.

It was the policeman on the church premises that actually heard the gunshot and informed the Ibafo Police Division.

A senior police source had said, “Upon inspection of the bank, we observed that a part of the ATM had been melted with fire, but the robbers had not succeeded in removing any money.”

But the statement by Adejobi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, read in part, “The command wishes to put the records straight that the suspected robbers only attempted to break one of the ATMs in the MFM City in the Ibafo area, Ogun State around 0120hrs of Thursday, February 13, 2014 before the arrival of the Ibafo Police team, which dispersed the robbers and they (robbers) fled the point hurriedly, leaving their welding and breaking equipment behind.

“The equipment recovered at the scene include a cylinder containing Methane gas, sledge hammers, a ladder (used by the hoodlums to scale the fence) etc.  The police actually foiled the operation as nothing was taken away from the ATM. Even the ATM, which was just loaded with money, was only slightly touched by welding fire and not damaged.”

Adejobi explained in the statement that he did not confirm any robbery, but “praised the foiled robbery operation by the police.”

The PPRO added, “Hoodlums will always attempt to perpetrate their evil acts, but the law enforcement agencies are always available to curtail them. The policemen who actually responded to the distress calls and foiled the ATM robbery have been commended by the public.”
